Woodworking Hand Tools for Beginners:-

Build or Buy a Solid Wooden Workbench

Firstly, you will require a wooden workbench to get started as it’s the first step for a traditional woodworker’s workshop.

However, if you have a limited budget then you can skip it with anything that helps you to secure your wood in place for building and crafting and to protect your workpiece.

Still, it’s advised that you either make your wooden workbench or purchase one at a cheaper price if you feel building a workbench is too hard for you at the beginning.

Make your decision wisely, just be sure to choose to either build or buy a heavy and strong wooden workbench, with a 3″ solid top, well-built base legs along with two tough vices.

Basic hand tools:

Hand Saws

Handsaws are usually long, narrow saws with a wooden handle. They are mainly utilized for the shaping of your clump.

Hand saws are referred to as panel saws, which are used to chop pieces of wood into different shapes.

This enables to join the various pieces together and sculpt a wooden item. Before you buy the saw for the wood, you need to decide what sort of saw you will require for your building your project work.

Use:

  • You may mark the place with a pencil to cut in a particular direction.
  • In order to get the accurate cut, angle the saw, normally 45 degrees is the standard for all types, but you choose if your design is different.
  • When you start to saw, you must hold your elbow close to yourself. It will ensure a clean cut without tilting the blade.
  • Push the saw in an easy & soft motion, don’t pressure too much in a hurry.

Chisels

A chisel is a hand tool shaped cutting with the blade on its end, for cutting a hard object such as wood. Chisels are one of the significant and must-have tools that you will need in the woodworking.

There are various types of chisels starting from bench chisels to mortising chisels, skew chisels, paring chisels, and dovetail chisels.

You just have to choose the one which works the best for your woodworking project.

Chisel is the most useful tool more than any other tool, so it’s the wise idea to have it in your toolkit. Mostly in every project, you will need a superior quality set of chisels which will last for many years.

You may purchase some plastic handle bench chisels at a reasonable price, but its recommended to take the lighter wooden handle chisels with high-quality steel.

Once, you cross the elementary stage of woodworking then eventually you can add some specialty chisels such as fishtail chisels paring chisels, etc. Though, bench chisels will work for almost everything.

Use:

  • To Mortise cut – Put the bevel down. You Push the back of the chisel to remove thin slices. Manage the depth by rising and slightly lowering the handle.
  • To Remove wood chunks – Cut off out big pieces of wood by slicing small amounts with each cut. Chop down about 1/2in with the chisel. To remove the piece, then chisel from the end. Make sure your chisel is sharpened for this cut.

Plane

A plane is a tool for giving the wood a proper shape using muscle strength to push the cutting blade towards the wood surface. Generally, all planes are for flattening, reducing the thickness of, and create a smooth surface to a rough piece of lumber.

The plane can also be used for producing vertical, horizontal or flat surfaces on workpieces which are quite large for shaping.

There are some special types of planes which are designed to cut into decorative moldings. The usage of Planning tools is required for measuring and sawing the uneven wood into a smooth surface to cut into fine thin layers.

The planes have various types and styles to carry out a particular function. The most commonly used planers are jack plane, jointing plane, block plane, spokeshave etc.

Use:

For Planing wood along its side grain will result in really lean shavings lifting up the surface of the wood when the edge of the plane iron is pushed forward, giving a smooth surface.

When working on some difficult woods, the grain sometimes moves in many directions and therefore working against the grain is difficult.

So, for such case, use a finely-set and sharp blade for smooth results.

The best technique about how to use plane:

  • Gently position the plane on the wood where you want to start cutting. Then softly push it forward with no downward pressure at the beginning. When the plane starts moving, slightly give downward pressure until it’s working in normal planning movement.
  • When you want the plane to stop cutting, don’t just lift the plane from the wood. Just the remove tote only. Leave the toe of the plane to continue to touch the wood until the cut stops. Then carefully lift the plane off the wood.

Safety rules:

  • Keep the woodworking place always clean.
  • Wait until the moving parts (blades, drill bits, etc.) come to a complete stop.
  • Before starting the work, be sure your tools are dry and not slippery
  • Be cautious and wear safety equipment before using the tools.
